The Four C’s - Critical Thinking, Communication, Collaboration, and Creativity - are important learning skills in a 21st Century Classroom. The Grinnell-Newburg School District is emphasizing developing these skills, especially in integrating technology in the classroom. Our technology tools provide amazing access to learning that once was very difficult or impossible to reach. They provide more opportunities for our teachers to reach all learners.
Student work is often received and viewed only by the classroom teacher, checked, and returned. Their work offers a very different value when the audience is a little larger, such as student partners, the entire class, the community, or the world. We have technology tools readily available in the classroom to allow students to create an outward facing connection of their learning with the world. Students have a greater opportunity to change the world if they have experience interacting with it to solve authentic problems.
You will find many examples of our students' great work using on our building Facebook pages. These are managed by school staff and provide a little insight into the greatness our students demonstrate every day.

Fire Safety for EveryoneStudents in Mrs. Gohlmann's First Grade class at Fairview Elementary worked in small groups to create fire safety videos based on what they learned from Grinnell Fire Department's Jed Petersen after he made class visits as a part of Fire Prevention Week. Students used the concepts they learned to write, produce, film, and edit short videos on their iPads using a variety of applications. Students were the directors of the creative process and worked together to complete the work. They used Air Drop to transfer their videos to Mrs. Gohlmann's iPad, where they provided feedback for the final touches before it was uploaded to YouTube. The applications used were Camera, Clips, iMovie, ChatterPixs, and Photos. |
