Weekly Update: November 2, 2018

Dr. Janet Stutz

Dear Board of Education, Staff, Families and Friends,

Happy November!  Parent/teacher conferences were well attended last week!  Thank you to all who participated in these important parent/teacher conference sessions.  I would also like to thank our staff for your preparation on making these sessions valuable for our parents.  I encourage parents to reach out to teachers throughout the school year if you have any questions or concerns regarding your student’s learning experiences.   We are here to serve our families and students! Just as a reminder there is no school on Monday, November 5 so that our teachers can participate in professional development.

Communication vehicles in the event of an emergency, weather related delay or closing:

“8” Ways to Know: We have identified several ways for parents to learn about school related events in a variety of locations.   Listed below are the vehicles that we will use to help parents find out about weather related cancellations, upcoming events, school district information, etc…

All 8 of these may be used when there is a weather related emergency or cancellation.   Voice reach will be used when weather may cause a delay or cancellation. If school is closed or delayed for weather you will receive a voice reach before 6:30 am.  You will also receive a voice reach for other related events that are considered emergencies. Please be sure that your telephone information is up to date in our Infinite Campus System so that you receive this type of critical communication.

Grinnell High School Robotics Team Receives $5000 Grant from Monsanto Fund

Students at Grinnell High School have found external support as they utilize robots to improve skills in science and engineering. The Monsanto Fund, a philanthropic arm of Bayer, recently awarded a one-time $5000 grant to the TechTigers to support their FIRST Robotics activities and encourage local students who participate in the program.

The TechTigers will use support from the Monsanto Fund grant to participate in FIRST Robotics and its educational programs and competitions. FIRST enables teams of students to compete with others in building, designing and programming their own robots to perform pre-assigned tasks– giving young students a chance to get involved with real-world engineering.

The Board will officially accept this donation at the November 14th meeting.

Community Planning Sessions
November 8, 2018:  6-8 PM at Bailey Park
November 10, 2018:  10-12 AM at Grinnell Middle School

We would like to invite the Grinnell Community to attend one of two focus group meetings in which the goal is to plan for future listening tours and community engagements.  These planning meetings are to generate ideas on how to collect information from our public regarding school facilities and plans. We envision these meetings as a discussion with our public to identify the following:  dates we should host the engagement meetings, process to collect ideas from our public about a facility plan, identify current information that might be helpful to our community to share during the listening sessions, and ideas on how to bring a variety of stakeholders to future listening tours and engagement activities.

If you are unable to attend these community planning sessions but would like to provide input please visit this website Community Planning Process Form. Please check out our Facebook, Twitter, and our district website https://www.grinnell-k12.org/ to stay in tune to our facility planning and future engagement sessions.
