Weekly Update: June 10, 2022

Dear Grinnell Board of Education, Staff, Families, and Friends:

Summer is in full swing, and we successfully navigated the water emergency. Thank you to all of our staff for responding so quickly in order to accommodate our students for summer school!  Please be sure to check your infinite campus set up to receive emergency updates for voice reach, email, and now text notifications. Please be sure not to mark our emergency messages as SPAM. They will bounce back to our system as not deliverable. We are in the process of defaulting all contacts to receive voice, text, and email. This is our vehicle to notify our families in the event of an emergency. We have discovered a few issues with various cell services on the voice reach. If the voice reach does not reach your phone, please go to your email to check the message before calling the district office. Thank you for your assistance with our communication emergency procedures.

There will not be a weekly update next Friday, June 17.   Happy Father’s Day to all!

Science of Reading Training:

Teachers in grades K-4 participated in the Science of Reading Training this past week. We are very excited to engage in this work over the next school year. This shift in the teaching of reading will focus on what matters most, as evident through research in early literacy instruction. Teachers will look at reading instruction through this lens and will focus on each component as students learn to read. Specific skills and decoding strategies will be a major focus during this shift.

Construction Projects Sunset St.

Please know that the only way to get to the high school at this time is via 6th ave to Bliss St.   We are asking all to slow down as you make your way through the parking lots at the high school (Specifically to gain access to the north side of the building). It is really tight around the back of the high school. Please travel safely.

Summer Sports:

It was a fabulous night for softball and baseball at GHS last Friday as we hosted Little League Night!

Grinnell Middle School and Grinnell High School are excited to announce a new program that will be implemented in 22-23 to support students’ engagement in school and with graduation. Check & Connect is a nationally-recognized program with proven success since its inception in 1990. It is research and evidence-based and the only dropout prevention program identified by What Works Clearinghouse to have strong effects on staying in school. Trained school staff serve as mentors and are matched with students to provide a supportive connection to school and address barriers to success. School staff participated in a training in June to be able to start Check & Connect in September. The focus of the program will be to build consistent, positive, and trusting relationships with students & families to support academic success.

For more information about Check & Connect, please contact Melissa Ford, Director of Special Programs, at melissa.ford@grinnell-k12.org or 641-236-2656.

Thank you to the GHS Football Team and GHS Tiger Paws for volunteering at the Rotary Chicken BBQ. Special thanks to Coach Ethan Meints and Coach Jordan Smith for your support while diving in to handle some heavy lifting! The Rotary Group was very grateful!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Janet
