Weekly Update: July 14, 2017

Dear Grinnell-Newburg Families and Friends:

Summer seems to be passing us by very quickly and before you know it we will be welcoming our students back to school.  The district staff have been very busy planning for registration, welcome back activities and completing necessary tasks in order to have a smooth start to the school year.  This week, I have included a few informational items to keep our community updated.

Infinite Campus Parent Portal
Registration for the 2017-18 School Year is now open, and we encourage parents to complete the Online Registration Application.  Parents can access the application through the Parent Portal.  Families new to the district are encouraged to visit the district website at www.grinnell-k12.org for more information and instructions.

After opening the Online Registration site to parents this week, we have discovered a few small hiccups that we have been working quickly to resolve.  Most notably, student schedules were available for review.  Please know that we are still working to finalize student schedules, and have turned off access to view schedules at this time, so as to avoid confusion.  Schedules will be made available to parents and students as soon as they are finalized.  Please contact your building principal if you have questions regarding your student's schedule.

Thanks to those who have already started your registration application, and for your patience as we continue to work with a (relatively) new system.

Summer School Visit:
Students returned to the summer program this past week after the short Fourth of July break.  I had an opportunity to walk through the summer program and observe our students working with our AmeriCorp staff as well as our summer school teachers.  It was evident that students were engaged in activities during small group reading instruction time.  This has been a fabulous partnership!

AEA 267 name change:
The AEA 267 has changed their name to Central Rivers AEA.  Our AEA supports our school district in a variety of ways.  They assist us with various student services, trainings, curriculum support, and work with our Department of Education to ensure that we are kept abreast of any changes that may be forthcoming.   Our AEA point of contact is Karen Aldrich.   I had an opportunity to visit with Karen this past week to discuss our programs and how we can best serve our students in some of our partnership programs.  We will continue our collaboration with our area superintendents in our region to design a program evaluation that will best serve our students.

3rd Grade Giving Gardens:
Our third grade teachers have delivered produce to MICA from the 3rd Grade Giving Gardens that the students started this year.  This was part of the community engagement projects that students did this year at Davis.  Funding for this was supplied by the UCC church in Grinnell.  The teachers delivered 13.4 pounds of Kohlrabi to MICA this past week!

Community Event this Weekend:
“Music Man” performances are happening this weekend.  Tonight the show begins at 7:00 PMin the High School Auditorium.  I hope you will join me to enjoy the show!  Our very own Mike Hunter is the director for this event.
