Weekly Update: October 16, 2020

Weekly Update: October 16, 2020: One Day early

Dear Board of Education, Staff, Families, and Friends:

I hope this weekly update finds you well and ready for a fabulous fall weekend! Fall is my most favorite time of the year and I enjoy the beauty of Iowa’s fall colors.

The chill in the air reminds me to let our parents know that winter is just around the corner. We will be working with our staff and administration on how to implement snow virtual days in the event that snow would prevent us from traveling to our school buildings. We will no longer have to cancel school, but host school virtually through activities online. This will allow us to keep our end of the year schedule. We will be working through these details in the next few weeks so that we are prepared for a snow event.  I will be sending out further information to our families in the coming weeks.

No school tomorrow for students on October 16, 2020!  Enjoy your weekend!

Parent/Guardian Teacher Conferences:

We hope that you enjoy your parent/guardian teacher conference time this evening and tomorrow morning! Although these are being held a little differently than in the past years, we are grateful to all of our families for participating in these valuable sessions. We are here to support your student in their learning!

21-day Equity Challenge:

Today’s challenge is to learn more about immigration and refugees in Iowa. The lesson today highlights the history of refugees in Iowa, the number of displaced families around the world, and much more. I hope you are able to use this opportunity to learn more about refugees and immigration by taking this challenge. Each day I find a wealth of information that enables me to have a better understanding.

REDI Policy Committee:

I want to thank our policy REDI committee for your review of the 100’s and the excellent discussion regarding our policies. Please watch for a doodle poll document to continue our discussion at the next meeting. I will be sending a summary early next week for your review.

Wednesday, October 21- District Office Closed

The District office at 925 Broad Street will be closed next Wednesday as the owner will be replacing the meter box with Alliant and we will have no power.  We will be working remotely on Wednesday. You can still call the main number to reach us or send an email if you need immediate assistance.

Board Meeting:

The school board hosted their bi-monthly board meeting this past Wednesday! They approved many of the emergency quotes to complete projects from the Derecho storm this past August.  The school district continues the work to repair the damage. They also learned about a software program that will house student transcripts. This project will allow our Alumni students to access transcripts much more easily through this new software system. It will take a while to transfer the data, but we will keep you posted as to when you will be able to access the system.

The Board approved the learning goal action plan for this school year as well as FEMA policy requirements. I provided them an update on our professional development related to diversity and the 21-day challenge highlighted learning sessions.

Let’s give a shout out to our Cooks who continue to prepare meals for all students!

Free Breakfast and Lunch for all students for the remainder of this 20-21school year has been announced by the USDA. We are grateful to our cafeteria workers for preparing and providing these lunches to all of our students every day! Here are a few photos of students and staff enjoying lunch!

Students continue to work hard in their studies and wear their masks well when they can’t socially distance themselves or even when they are sitting behind the plexiglass. We are so proud of our students!
