Weekly Update: July 27, 2018

Dear Grinnell School Board, Staff, Families and Friends:

Happy Friday!  August 1 is just around the corner!  In a very short time, our hallways will be filled with energized students and staff as we kick of the 2018-19 school year.  But not quite yet! There is still time to catch some fun in the sun, dive into a new book, or spend time with family and friends over the next few weeks!

FFA Awesome showing at the County Fair:

Our Grinnell FFA students were quite successful this year at the County fair.  Along with their success, we also caught a few photos of Mr. Seney! I am not sure if your will recognize him in these photos.  Take a close look! Congratulations to Mr. Seney, for winning Best Dressed last week at the County Fair!

National Night Out:

National Night Out

This year the Grinnell Police Department wants to invite the entire community to Central Park on August 7th, 2018 for the annual National Night Out event. The event will begin at 6:00 PM and run until 8:00 PM. There will be a DJ, dunk tank, food vendors, as well as free ice cream and root beer floats provided by the Optimist Club.  We encourage our students to come on out to the park for this wonderful event. We are grateful to our Grinnell Police Department for their collaboration with our school district.

Board Meeting Update:

The Board of Education approved the purchase agreement for the 11th avenue property.  I want to clarify to our community that once a school district deems that a property can not be used we are required to sell the property.  After careful evaluation of the property by Estes Construction and our Architects, CMBA, it was determined that this property was not a viable option for the district based upon safety, size of the property, and number of students on the campus.

Background information:
The district received a quote to deconstruct the building on the property for $850,000.  The land value was determined to be roughly worth $400,000. The sale of the property was for $10,000. The Deed Restrictions in the purchase agreement ensures that the building will be removed within 18 months.   Therefore, it was determined that this offer plus the fact that the district would not use taxpayer dollars to deconstruct the building was a great value to us. The community neighbors provided input that they would like to see residential properties on the land.   The buyers are looking to build a mixture of townhomes and single family homes. I recognize that some of our community members are upset with the amount to purchase the land in the agreement. Please know that we have not had a lot of interest in the property, taxes would no longer be abated for the district as students are not using the property, and the property is a liability to the district.  Today, I also learned that the district could potentially be liable for sitting on this property waiting for a higher offer.

I want to thank those community members for attending the hearing.  There were several questions asked during the hearing that I have followed up on and will be reporting out to the community at our next board meeting, August 8, 2018.  Please feel free to contact me at any time if you have any questions.

Have a great weekend,

Janet
