The first day of school was wonderful! It was awesome to see so many families yesterday as students were welcomed back to school! I want to thank our families and staff for sharing some memorable moments.
Kindergarten BBQ:
The Kindergarten BBQ is in its 5th year of welcoming Kindergartners and their families to Merrill Park to meet fellow classmates and their families, teachers, and principals. Grinnell Connected PTO will be providing a free meal of hot dogs, chips, fruit, lemonade and water. This event will be held today August 24 at 5:00pm at Merrill Park (rain location is Davis Elementary).

Box top collection boxes:
Box top collection as well as copies of the weekly update are available at several businesses throughout the community. You may drop off box top’s or pick up a printed copy of the weekly update at: HyVee, Fareway, Walmart, McNally’s & the Mayflower Office. Thank you PTO Connected for having the boxes made and placed at each location!
Football Game Tonight: Please keep an eye on tonight’s weather if you or your students are planning on attending the game this evening. I have received an informational weather watch from our Emergency Management Team for Poweshiek County that indicates that there is potential severe weather between 3-11 PM.
Football game expectations:
Elementary School Students

Students are not allowed to bring in bags or backpacks into the stadium

Elementary students are expected to be in the stands with an adult watching the game

Middle School Students

Students are not allowed to bring in bags or backpacks into the stadium

Middle school students need to sit within the “Middle School” section, unless they are sitting with their parents

Students are not allowed to go over to the visitor side

Students shall not sit and hang out by the concession stand

Middle school students are expected to be in the stands watching the game
High School Students

High school students are encouraged to sit/stand in the high school student section
-
Students are not allowed to bring in bags or backpacks into the stadium

High school students are expected to be in the stands watching the game

All chants should be to encourage our team and never directed towards opponents
All Students

No abusive or unruly behavior

No throwing of objects or any projectile onto the field or in the stands

No use of any prohibited items (artificial noisemakers, signs, masks, etc...)
We appreciate your help with the implementation of these expectations and rules to ensure student safety while giving our fans the opportunity to completely enjoy the game. Thank you for supporting the Tiger football team as they take the field against their opponents.
Virtual Backpack:
Please be sure to check out the virtual backpack here. There are many activities that your students can sign up for during the course of the year. Please check the backpack frequently as this gets updated often. Parents will notice that there is a class that you can sign up for too called Strategies and Tips for Extraordinary Parenting Class
Before and After School Program Survey:
Please take a moment to participate in a brief survey to help us understand the community's need for additional before- and after-school activities and care for children age 5-12. The information gathered from this survey will be used in planning for a possible before- and after-school program. Please note that details about the program (e.g., times, programming, cost) are still being determined.

School Bond Information:
Please stay informed about the upcoming school bond vote for September 11, 2018. I have hosted several meetings throughout the community. In case you missed last night’s Bond Informational meeting, the League of Women Voters will be hosting a second event on September 5 at 7:00 PM at the Drake Library. This Bond will enable the district to provide safe and secure entry ways for students, separate drop off and pick up areas, storm shelters, College and Career spaces, critical Heating and Cooling Updates, Plumbing, and electrical updates. It will also enable the district to house students and staff in learning environments that are ADA compliant and meet the needs of our gifted and special needs learners. This past summer we have experienced several system failures due to aging systems. The plan, that will cost the average homeowner 64 cents a day, will enable the district to build a new PreK-5 building, completely gut and renovate the middle school, and renovate the high school. Please know that the district does not have dollars to fix the 42-48 million dollars worth of renovations in five buildings just to bring them up to code, without adding any educational learning spaces or longevity to the life of the school building. The plan was designed based upon feedback from our many community engagements meetings, our new architect firm, administrators, teachers, and students.
