Weekly Update: September 25, 2020

Dear Grinnell Newburg Board of Education, Staff, Families and Friends:

It is my hope that this weekly update finds you well. We are saddened by the recent tragedy of Michael Williams, Grinnell father and community member. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family during this difficult time. On behalf of the School Board, I want to thank our Grinnell Tiger staff, administrators, counselors and social workers for their support to his children, family and our students during this tragic time while supporting the wishes of his family.

District Office has moved our location:

This week the Grinnell Newburg School District Office moved from the high school to 925 Broad Street. It is my hope that you stop by to say hello and see our office. We are open for business after a busy few days of moving. At this time to reach us, please call the main number at 641-236-2700 or send an email to the person you are trying to reach. We are still finalizing phone lines and other minor startup items.

REDI Policy Committee:

Today, the policy REDI committee will be receiving instructions for reviewing the 100 policies.  REDI committee policy members should watch for this email and please contact Amber Robson at amber.robson@grinnell-k12.org if you need assistance with any of the documents for review.  This committee will schedule a meeting the week of October 12th for a discussion regarding these documents. A tentative Policy committee meeting for the REDI policy committee will be held on October 14 at 5:00 PM.

The REDI Co-Leaders representatives for each committee will be receiving a link for a zoom to share an update on progress, as of now, in the coming weeks following our first PD October 5. Following this zoom meeting, the communications group will put together a current progress document for our community.

Board Meeting Update:

This past week the Board of Education held their second meeting of the month for September.   We reviewed the district overarching goals. This document is a working document and will continue to be modified seeking final approval in October. The Board approved the quote to repair our bleachers, seat belt policy for our new buses, and tabled the international quarantine guidelines for further review and definition clarification. This will be brought back to our next meeting.

COVID update:  Data COVID dashboard

Our efforts at this time appear to be working, however it is important that we do not ease up on our efforts. Mask up, or wear your faceshield (face covering), and if you are outside and cannot socially distance properly, wear your mask or face covering. Please wear your mask during indoor volleyball games, or other indoor activities at all times.   Be sure to keep wiping down surfaces too.  I know this is challenging, but if we can stay on top of this we can remain in school. Our students are doing very well!  I am so very proud of all the efforts of our students and staff.

The Poweshiek/Jasper numbers this morning are 7.5% and 11.9%. This means that although we are not seeing cases in school, it is in our county and this increase is concerning to me.  This weekend- help us to keep students safe by wearing your mask, socially distance, and stay home if you are sick or not feeling well. Thank you for your efforts in keeping our students and staff safe.

COVID Q & A:

Take a look at this guideline to assist you with questions and answers regarding COVID. If you have a question regarding COVID illness please contact our local Department of Public Health or reach out to your physician. If you have a question regarding any of our protocols, please feel free to contact your school nurse, administrator or me.

Road Work:

There will be some road work done at 8th  Avenue and Bliss from Sunset Street to 6th Avenue on Tuesday, September 29, 2020 and Wednesday, September 30, 2020. The road will be torn up the first day and seal coated the second day. The work will be done during school hours so it should not be a conflict much with morning and afternoon traffic.

Our students and staff are doing a great job modeling how we stay safe!  Wearing masks, face coverings and washing hands frequently or using hand sanitizer.  Great Job Tigers!

Congratulations to our Tigers on their win against Osky. It was a record evening. The new lights on the field enabled me to take some clear photos from the near top of the stadium stands. Congratulations to Garrett Blalock the winner of the Tiger Kid Captain, who is wearing his brother Gene’s #50 jersey on the field! Garrett is a 4th grader at Davis and was selected from a winning bid for the virtual auction received by Dan & Blake Walker at Tiger Live Stream.

Wyatt Hunter’s performance Friday of 453 yards rushing, 9 TDs and 56 points put him in the Iowa High School Football Record Books. His 9 TDs is tied for 3rd most in Iowa history and his 453 yards is 6th in all-time Iowa single game rushing records. Congratulations Wyatt Hunter!

Storm Update:

The Roofing will begin next week. Materials have been delivered. We are making progress on trees as well. Quotes are coming in and our team is working through each item as quickly as possible. We do know that it has been challenging to find business to do some of the work as they are overwhelmed across the state. Boyd Jones

Remember to check the Virtual Backpack! There are new items on the backpack including a message from the Women League of Voters for parents, Clover Kids and Scouts. Take a look!
